I started off by playing the piano - I was given playing lessons after having heard Maria Callas’ aria compilation LP playing, and at the same time I tried reaching the notes she sang. Now, I’m not exactly the most extroverted human being there is, and am thus lacking the need of limelights (although performing feels great) but since my very early years, I knew I wanted like to be involved with “that stuff” coming out of the tv set speakers when I watched the then movies, tv series, everything. As long as I can remember, I’ve had that in me. This is by no means a short story, but… it all began with an idea that I wanted to make music, to somehow “have an orchestra” at my fingertips, to be a conductor, to compose… something. Maybe someone considering a composing decision will be given enough courage to take the right route.įirst off, tell us about the journey to how you got to where you are in your career today. As a young kid, I felt I couldn’t get any music tech help from just about anyone, so I decided back then that if I ever had a chance to share my bag of tricks, I’d do it. It’s a pleasure, I believe in the fact that opening up opens doors, too. Hi Petri, thanks for agreeing to talk to us today.

Here Petri tells us about his journey to where he is today, his studio tools, how he created the central themes of Quantum Break through his music and how one track, in particular, resulted in him receiving a speeding fine. Since then he has amassed an enviable collection of hardware synths, which he uses alongside his own ´self-made´ plugins and software from iZotope, Spitfire Audio, ProjectSAM, Vir2 and the company Petri describes as "magical" - Zynaptiq. The composer behind the soundtrack for Remedy Entertainment´s hugely popular video game Quantum Break, started his musical journey when he first played piano at his Grandmother´s friend´s house. When we arranged to interview Petri Alanko for the Time+Space website we never imagined the wonderfully thorough and interesting responses we would receive to our questions.
